内容简介
Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) produced some of the most seductive drawings in Western art. This book, published to accompany an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, reproduces his finest examples, revealing the delicacy and freedom of execution that so impressed early commentators and had such a profound effect on subsequent generations of artists, notably François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard.
Well-known art historians Pierre Rosenberg and Louis-Antoine Prat examine these masterly studies, focusing on the artist's development as a draftsman, the techniques that he perfected, and the fascinating role that drawing played in his work. The illustrations, which include recently discovered works, are superbly reproduced.

Format: Hardcover
Enthusiasts of French drawing need not hesitate in acquiring this catalogue of a Royal Academy exhibition. Louis-Antoine Prat writes in his introductory essay "that Watteau was always considered a greater draughtsman than a painter is evidence in itself; he knew it and was disappointed not to attain the same high standards in his paintings as he did in his drawings".
The authoritative authors of this catalog, Prat and Pierre Rosenberg, have previously published the catalog raisonne of Watteau's drawings in 1996. In their annotations of the 88 choice examples presented at the the Royal Academy, it is refreshing to read their forthright and knowledgeable opinions on the drawings.
Examining these beautiful, elegant and skillfully executed art works has given me great pleasure. It is good to have the collection of drawings faithfully reproduced in color and on good paper. Some of the examples have not been previously published. A distinguished issue.
