《新策略大学英语阅读教程3/新策略大学英语系列教材》： It is true that the astronauts encountered greater exposure to solar radiation than if they had remained on earth.But this exposure was only slightly greater than on earth because of shielding in the spacecraft and in the pressure suits， plus the relatively short time of exposure. Consider the types of extemal radiation the astronauts would have been exposed to： （a） alpha radiation： Alpha particles are easily stopped in matter， usually absorbed completely by the outer layer of dead skin or a sheet of paper.（b） beta radiation： Beta particles penetrate more deeply than alpha particles， but even normal clothing will stop them.（c） gamma radiation： Gamma rays are very penetrative and often go right through the human body but a few inches of lead can stop them. （d） X—rays： X—rays are less energetic than gamma rays and may be stopped by a few millimeters of lead.（e） radon that leaks out of rocks.Airline pilots have been experiencing greater dosages than other people.It is unlikely that the astronauts received greater dosages flying to the moon than they did as test pilots prior to their astronaut days. ……
