Beijing was historically known as Peking. As the capital city
for both the Ming and Qing dynasties, Peking witnessed both
0ultural exchanges and diplomatic confrontation between
East and West over a period of three hundred years. The
history of this period was recorded in many books published
in Europe, which also included interesting images of old
Peking. This book is the first attempt of its kind to present the
best European illustrations of Peking in one volume. From the
earliest visit of the East India Company's delegation to the
Qing's court in the middle of 17th century, to the decline of
China's last imperial dynasty in the early 20th century, from
imperial court ceremonies to the life of ordinary Pekingese,
from the historicat heritage of Chinese architecture to the
impact of European influence, this book provides us with a
rich tapestry of Peking' s social and architectural history. The
majority of the pictures here will be new to modern readers.
These images, together with the accompanying text, bring
the old imperial city vividly to life.
Susan spent all her childhood in Beijing and has many personal
memories of the old city walls and gates which survived until the
middle 1970' s. As Beijing grew and modernized rapidly in the past
few decades, and attracted many more international visitors, Susan
became more interested in discovering what had been revealed of
the old city through the eyes of the earliest travelers from Europe.
Together with her husband, they visited many antiquarian book
shops in Europe, mainly in England, to collect the illustrations of
imperial Peking contained in this book. Many prints were also found
in Hong Kong' s specialized antiquarian print shops. Building this
collection also increased Susan' s interest in researching the history
of the period in order to provide any accompanying narrative for the
images. The process of collecting, researching and editing these
prints has been a fascinating journey, and they would like to share
their enjoyment with more people through this book. Susan is an
investment banker by profession.

Roy Massey is a native of the United Kingdom, and has lived and
worked in Hong Kong for 12 years. During this period, he has visited
Beijing more than 40 times. Helping his wife Susan to create this
book gave him a deeper understanding of the history of the interac-
tions between China and the Western world, which began much
earlier than most of us today realise. Enjoying the modern city, whilst
learning more about its history, has increased Roy' s affection for
Peking, and reinforced his long time interest in Chinese art and
culture. Roy is an executive with a Hong Kong listed company.

The first exchanges between China and the west can be traced back as far
as two thousand years ago. The first contact was when Zhang Qian, on the
orders of Emperor Hanwudi during the Han Dynasty, traveled twice to the
west in order to seek the support of a small neighboring country, Yuezi to
fight against the Huns. Although his missions failed, by accident, he had
opened the Silk Road connecting Han China with the westem world.
However, exchanges between the west and east really began in the 15th
century. In the following 300 years, the Celestial Empire of the east,
adhering to the belief that "China was the center of the earth", innocently
considered the west to be simply an extension of the Chinese Empire.
Whilst the westerners, through the messages from the missionaries and
merchants, found this eastern empire so spectacular that some renaissance
thinkers even regarded China as an ideal heaven on earth. In other words,
both sides started their relationship based on a fundamental misconception
on the other party.
During the 15th to 18th centuries, China was actually the most powerful
nation in the world. The misconception that the world was centered on
China was caused not only by the cultural constraints, but also a reflection
of the strength of the empire. In the early 15th century, Zheng He led a fleet
of more than 60 ships and sailed seven times to the south Pacific; along with
him was a crew of more than 20,000, with the largest boat carrying more
than 1,000 sailors. Even by today's standards, it was definitely a super fleet.
In the following centuries Columbus' Spanish fleet discovered America, and
Vasco da Gama's Portuguese fleet crossed the Indian Ocean. Their missions
were remarkable, but as their crews were less than a few hundreds, and their
fleets only 3-4 ships, they were not comparable with Zheng He's forceful
fleet. This is just one example of the relative strength of the Chinese Empire
at the time.
The broader exchange with the west marked the beginning of the ancient
empire's decline, which was not directly as a result of these exchanges, but
because the empire was still highly satisfied with its central status, and saw
