《中国的文明》旨在向对中国所知甚少的外国读者介绍中国文明的历史概况。书中简要介绍了一些中国文明进程中值得关注的点，例如封建时代、法律和政府、女人和孩子、哲学、体育、娱乐等。 The "China Yesterday" series include a few Sinological and biographical works on the topics of Chinese history, literature, society, etc. All these works were written by foreigners and shed light on China in unique perspectives. The Civilization of China suggests a rough outline of Chinese civilization from the earliest times down to the early 20th century.

作者简介

翟理斯（Herbert Allen Giles，1845—1935），1867年来到中国，历任天津、宁波、汉口、广州、汕头、厦门、福州、上海、淡水等地英国领事馆翻译、领事等职，归国后任剑桥大学教授。 Herbert Allen Giles (8 December 1845 – 13 February 1935) was a British diplomat and sinologist who was the professor of Chinese at Cambridge University for 35 years.
