The structure of matter relates to theways the atoms of these elements are arranged. Aproperty is any characteristic that gives a sample of mat-ter its unique identity. A molecule is an entity composedof two or more atoms with the atoms attached to one an-other in a specific way.Section 1.2 Matter exists in three physical states, gas, liquid, and solid, which are known as the states of mat-ter. There are two kinds of pure substances: elementsand compounds. Each element has a single kind of atomand is represented by a chemical symbol consisting ofone or two letters, with the first letter capitalized. Com-pounds are composed of two or more elements joinedchemically. The law of constant composition, also calledthe law of definite proportions, states that the elementalcomposition of a pure compound is always the same. Most matter consists of a mixture of substances. Mixtureshave variable compositions and can be either homoge-neous or heterogeneous; homogeneous mixtures arecalled solutions.Section 1.3 Each substance has a unique set ofphysical properties and chemical properties that can beused to identify it. During a physical change, matterdoes not change its composition. Changes of state arephysical changes. In a chemical change (chemical reac-tion) a substance is transformed into a chemically differ-ent substance. Intensive properties are independent ofthe amount of matter examined and are used to identifysubstances. Extensive properties relate to the amount ofsubstance present. Differences in physical and chemicalproperties are used to separate substances. The scientific method is a dynamic process used toanswer questions about our physical world. Observationsand experiments lead to scientific laws, general
