It was not until 1791 that the great French anatomist George Cuvier deduced that the animal was in fact a fly-ing reptile, whose fourth finger supported a wing.It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but, on the contrary, their social being that de- termines their consciousness. The implications of all this were that it was not the disturbance of sleep that mattered, but the disturbance of dreaming. It was not until 1869, when H. M. S. Porcupine was put at the disposal of the Royal Society for several cruis- es, that a series of deep soundings was obtained in the Atlantic and the first samples were collected by dredg- ing the bottom. It is by the ability to observe and understand their environment and then either to adapt to that environment or to control and adapt in to their own needs that human beings have distinguished themselves from other ani- mals. The increase in the size and quality of the factors of production underlies growth, but it is certain other factors —— innovations and entrepreneurship, the part played by government, and the role of investment as distinct from consumption —— that deserve special attention. It is of the patient and/or her immediate family that the cessation of the employment of extraordinary means to prolong the life of the body when there is irrefutable evidence that biological death is imminent is the deci- sion.It was only thirty years ago that the building industry felt confident enough to erect office blocks of steel and reinforced concrete that had more than a dozen floors.
