If castles scattered on the European continent represent the romantic, noble, and loyal chivalry in the Middle Ages, the Great Wall in the remote east reflects the pursuit of unity and the unyielding spirit of the Chinese nation. After erosion for thousands of years, both have been scarred in most parts. Far apart from each other, the two kinds of military constructions have different defensive functions, architectural characteristics, and cultural inheritance. Contrary to castles that only defend tens of kilometers of feudal territory, the Great Wall runs over mountains and across rivers for more than 5,000 kilometers, enclosing the whole northern borders of the Chinese empire to form a chain-like defense line from the East China Sea to the inland of Asia.

节选

As one of the four great ancient civilizations in the world, the Chinese civilization saw the technique of building primitive walls as early as 5,000 years ago. The stone walls at the Shimao Site in Shaanxi Province and the rammed earth walls at the Liangzhu Site in Zhejiang Province both replicate our ancestors’ wisdom through which they transfigured nature as per the local conditions. The architectural wisdom was passed down and laid a technical foundation for the large-scale construction of the Great Wall by later generations.
