本计划是在“未来地球计划初步设计(Future Earth Initial Design)”的框架下着重讨论亚洲的可持续发展问题，从“动态亚洲”、“发展中的亚洲”以及“向可持续发展转变的亚洲”三个方面，阐述亚洲可持续发展研究的主要科学问题、研究方向与研究方法。本研究计划也是MAIRS与日本综合地球环境学研究所(RIHN)一起合作的成果，中国科学院和中国科协共同资助了与该计划相关的系列会议。
