节选

《中国经典儿童文学走向世界-奶奶的蛋糕(英)》: Xiangduo said, "Right, the county town is far, far away. It takes the train more than two hours to get there." Tianyuan hesitated upon Xiangduo's words. Worriedly he showed his concern, "That far? How can I come back after getting the cake? "The same way you get there! Xiangduo chuckled. "The train to the Town of Wangjiayu leaves the county town at four p.m. You can surely take the train directly home after getting the cake. "Is that so?" Tianyuan also laughed at his own anxiety minutes ago. A stone in his heart fell to the ground. Holding Xiangduo's hand, he said cheerfully, "Wow, that's great! I will tell Grandma after I get the cake then. Let me give her a happy surprise. For sure she will not let me go if she knows that I am going there to get her a cake!" "She will be thrilled to see the cake!" "Mhm, that's the plan. Everyday Grandma is so busy, doing this and that. She never takes any rest. Working in the fields, doing housework, phis taking care of me ... these are just too much for her, though she never complains, Tianyuan said with great sympathy. Drawing her hands away, Xiangduo suddenly put on a serious face, "Remember, Tianyuan, make sure you stay with me when we are in the county town. Do not wander around by yourself. There are lots, and lots of people in the county town. Phis, do not easily trust a random city folk With his eyelids flickering, Tianyuan flashed a puzzled look, "What's wrong with the city folks?" Tilting her head, Xiangduo looked so grown up, "My uncle told me so. He said there were many swindlers in the county town. Little kids are their favorite targets. You should never ever talk with them, not to mention trust them. Every time I went to the city, my uncle always reminded me again and again. Tianyuan never stepped out of the village. In the village, for every sneeze you can locate its owner. Everyone helped everyone, like a big family. Therefore, Tianyuan was a little skeptical about Xiangduo's instruction, but he still nodded earnestly, "Oh. While talking, they walked to Papa Ma's convenience shop. With his eyes closed, Papa Ma was sitting in a wicker chair in front of the shop, nodding to the beat of some Chinese opera music from his radio. The unique nasal tunes of the typical Chinese opera music and accompanying percussion rhythms were floating in the air, wrapping him all over. Papa Ma was in his sixties. With a crooked back and lots of deep wrinkles, he looked like a man over seventy or even eighty. For years and years, he crouched still in front of the shop bathing in the sun and thus his face was plated with a darkish copper tune. Some greying hair lay here and there randomly on top of his head, just as lazily as the sleeping cat lying in front of the shop entrance, emphasizing the darkness of his face. Papa Ma might not remember to shave, nor wash his face, nor clip his long dirty nails ... he forgot every detail of his life to the maximum extent possible, but he did remember, in an impressive way, where every penny went for his business. Let's say you were one jiao short when buying some salt or vinegar from him several months ago, he would be still after you the next time he saw you, "Remember that jiao you owe me? Shall we settle the bill now? Tianyuan and Xiangduo stopped right under the tree in front of the entrance of the convenience shop. No, they had no interest whatsoever for listening to the Chinese Opera. It was Tianyuan. He needed to buy something. A calico cat was sleeping right in front of the door. With its sharp eyesight, Matuan spotted it within one second. Matuan got excited and ran towards the cat, barking loudly and wagging its tail tip. "Woof! Woof! Woof! The loud bark not only overshadowed Xiangduo's words, but also drove away the cat's sweet dream, like an unexpected guest. ……
