5. Going Against Mother's Will
    桑洛的伤好了。他跟娥并说，他要回家告诉母亲，准备好礼
物骑上快马再来娶她。分手前的那个晚上，他们的情话三个奘房
也装不下。桑洛临走的时候，把他这趟生意赚的钱全部塞在他养
伤时躺的褥子底下。
    When his wounds were healed, Sangluo told Ebing that
he would go home and tell his mother to prepare betrothal
gifts before he would ride a fast horse to bring her home. That
night before they parted, they chatted heart to heart. Before
he left, he put all the money he had eamed in doing the business
under the cotton-padded mattress, on which he had lain while
his wounds healed.
  那天早上，桑洛牵着马，跟送他的娥并并肩而行，几乎整个
勐根的人都在看着这一对恋人。姑娘们的目光带着太多的羡慕，
而上了年纪的人的目光里就只有为他们祝福了。人们异口同声地
说，这真是天生的一对啊!
    That morning, leading his horse, Sangluo walked with
Ebing shoulder to shoulder, and almost all the residents of
Menggen were looking at them. In the eyes of the girls, there
was too much envy; in the eyes of the elders, there was nothing
but sincere blessing. People said in one voice that this was a
born couple.
    一直送到那条盘山路上，到那个桑洛跌下崖的地方，桑洛竟
然跪下来，向那个地方的山神菩萨磕了三个头。他说这一跤跌得好
啊，就是这一跤，跌出了一个世界上*美满的姻缘，真的得好好
谢谢山神菩萨。别人的姻缘是月老牵的，他们的姻缘是山神牵的。

     Ebing accompanied him up to the winding mountain path.
At the spot where he had fallen down the cliff, Sangluo went
down on his knees and kowtowed three times to pay his respect
to the local mountain god. He said that this fall was good
because it led to the happiest marriage in the world, and that
he should express his gratitude to the mountain god because
it was the mountain god rather than the marriage god that had
brought them together.
    桑洛上马了，景多昂的小伙子要回家了!就在他的马要消失
到那个山弯后时，娥并放开嗓门大喊了一声：
    “我等你!……我掐着手指，一天天数着日子地等你!……”
     When Sangluo mounted his horse, it meant that the young
man from Jiangduoang would go home! Before his horse
disappeared behind the mountain twist, Ebing cried out at the
top of her voice.
   "I'll wait for you!...I'll count the days and look forward
 to seeing you again! ..."
  就这一声喊，缠绕
在桑洛身上再也不会消
散，他走到哪里都听到
这个声音。
  可是离家越近，桑
洛的心情就越沉重。这
一点用不着怀疑，妈妈
肯定是不会赞同这门亲
事的，该如何越过母亲
这一关?所有这一切，
自己该怎样跟妈妈说?
    Such a cry would
never fade away for
Sangluo, wherever he would go.
    However, the closer his home was, the heavier his heart
became. Undoubtedly, his mother would not agree to this
marriage, but how would he tell his mother about it and how
could he persuade her?
  其实，桑洛完全用不着想得这么多，桑洛人还没有到家，他
妈妈已经什么都知道了。
