the immediate texture of experience is crucial to "The Fallow Deer," in thesense that the whole poem hinges on the frisson with which Hardy makes us feelthe presence of a living body and become aware of ourselves as watchers of a scenethat seems, by its logic, to be dissolving before our eyes. That shifting ofimmediacy and emotion from the experience portrayed to the idea of a situation, bywhich Hardy brings to our apprehension of an abstract structure an almost physicalshiver of recognition, is the effect I want to isolate and suggest is characteristic ofhis work. By entering the binary structure from such a strange point ofidentification, Hardy generates a perspective that stands outside that binarystructure, positioned to find a lyric poignancy not in the experience of the deer(here) nor in that of the house-dwellers, but in the binary structure itself and theimage it gives of limitation and loss.Dialogue, along with memory, is another of Hardy's favourite vehicles fordramatising a split consciousness in his poems. The dialogue for Hardy figures theimpossible logic that fractures human existence, its brokenness reminding us thatexperience itself is a broken thing. He uses dialogue not as a form of social realism(as we might expect from a poet who has also been a novelist), nor as a means ofexploring the possibilities of communication, nor as a token of the richness andchallenge of community, but for its dramatic insistence on the fact that anyperspective must be partial. It is an image of imperfection, as if all experience couldbe seen as a tragic falling off from some imagined world where everything could beknown at once, and for all. The dialogue in "The Wind's Prophecy" represents asplit between self and self——between what the self is now and what the self willlater become——while also securing in the figure of the wind a wider, non-personalperspective that has the capacity to take in everything at once.
