It is so attractive, in fact, that several counties have spent a lot of money on expensive transport links that avoid the need for a sea-crossing.
Some of these projects are breathtaking in terms of size and difficulty. The resund Bridge and Tunnel project links Southern Sweden with Denmark. The waters of the Flinte Channel have for years been an expensive and a timeconsuming barrier to trade, as well as being busy and dangerous waters. Now, all that has changed. When you drive across the bridge today, you cannot even see the other end. That's because at over 8 kilometres long, this bridge is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world.That's not the only incredible feature of this amazing engineering feat: after 8 kilometres of travelling above the sea, the combined double-deck road and rail bridge plunges under the sea at Peberholm, an artificial island near the Danish coast. There it becomes a 4 kilometre long tunnel, another record breaker, since this is the longest combined road and rail tunnel in the world. Also, this bridge is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in the world.
But this is just one of several such projects around the globe. One of the first, and today regarded as deserving special listed status, is the motorway bridge joining Wales and England at Aust, near Bristol. Finished and opened in 1966, this suspension bridge was a triumph of engineering for its time.
