柯文思：用镜头向世界展现一个真实的中国 姓名：Malcolm Clarke 中文名：柯文思 国籍：英国 职业：奥斯卡获奖导演 语录：“中国的崛起”或者“中国的复兴”是21世纪*大且持续的新闻故事。 “那不是我看到的中国” 二十世纪八十年代，为了筹备一部纪录片，柯文思**次来到中国，并在中国居住了九个月。因为接触到了真正的中国，自那时起，他就爱上了中国。柯文思能清晰地记得40年前的点滴，他回忆道：“当时的外滩是一个非常特别的地方，它的一部分仍然是一个工作的码头，船只停泊在如今的和平饭店门口。” 此后，柯文思游历世界，在伦敦、纽约、洛杉矶等知名城市居住过，用镜头书写着他的电影人生，共获得4次奥斯卡提名，拿到过2座奥斯卡小金人、16座艾美奖奖杯。 看着西方媒体的报道，柯文思总觉得那不是他看到过的中国。慢慢地，他动了记录真实中国的念头。从2013年开始，柯文思将工作的重心放在了中国，并在中国拍摄电影。柯文思坦言对他来说，“中国的崛起”或者“中国的复兴”是二十一世纪*大且持续的新闻故事，“对于一个纪录片导演来说，这是一个绝佳的地方”。 “人们常说，如果一个人渴望看到未来，那么他应该去中国旅行。在很多方面，未来就是现在。没有任何一个国家能在如此短的时间内取得中国所取得的这些成就。”柯文思回忆道，自2013年起，他走遍了中国大多数省市，每到一处他都能看到巨大的挑战和发展的潜力。“所有人都在努力工作，他们都渴望建立一个更美好的未来。” 我在中国拍电影 历时五年打磨，2018年，柯文思导演的《善良的天使》在北京举办了国内的首映礼，这是一部以中美关系为题材的大型纪录电影。柯文思认为“需要一个从世界来观察中美关系背后普通人命运的视角”。 “然而该片在北美地区上映后，因为不符合美国一些人对中国的偏见认识，我们遭到了很多批评。”尽管如此，柯文思并不打算改变自己的目标——记录下真实的中国。 2019年，他又开始筹拍一部关于中国脱贫攻坚故事和小康生活的纪录片。众所周知，2020年是中国全面建成小康社会和“十三五”规划收官之年, 也是脱贫攻坚决战决胜之年。“近6亿人摆脱了贫困，普及了识字率，中产人群迅速壮大，中国仅仅用了40年时间就实现了今天的成就，这确实令人震惊。”柯文思认为。 来沪四十年 “作为一个英国人，我对西方超级大国的兴衰比较了解。中国将塑造二十一世纪，这一点毫无疑问，我们只需要看看西方应对新冠疫情危机的方式就知道。西方一些国家的政府过于短视、傲慢，没有从中国的经验中学习。”柯文思感叹。 距**次来沪已经40年过去了，如今定居在上海的柯文思仍旧*爱外滩，在他看来外滩是一个完美的地方，它静静述说着中国在过去100年间的进步和发展。从浦东看外滩和从外滩看浦东，有着不同的美景，诉说着不同的历史故事。 柯文思希望用他的镜头继续向世界展现一个真实的中国。 Malcolm Clarke: Using the camera to show the world a real China Name: Malcolm Clarke Chinese name: 柯文思 Nationality: British Position: Film director Quote: “‘The rise of China’ or ‘the renaissance of China’ is the biggest ongoing news story of the 21st century.” “That’s not the China I’ve seen with my own eyes” In the 1980s, Malcolm Clarke came to China for the first time for the preparation of a documentary film and lived here for nine months. As he got in touch with a real China, he fell in love with the country from then on. Clarke can clearly remember every moment 40 years ago. He recalls: “The Bund was a special place then. Part of it was a dock, with the boats berthing at the place which is now the entrance of Peace Hotel.” Since then, Clarke has travelled the whole world and lived in London, New York, Los Angeles and other famous cities, shooting films along the way. Altogether, he has won four Oscar nominations, two Oscar statuettes and 16 Emmy Awards statuettes. When reading the Western media reports, Clarke felt that it was not the China he had seen, so he decided to document the real China. Since 2013, Clarke has focused his work on China and began to produce films in China. For him, “the rise of China” or “the renaissance of China” is the biggest ongoing news story of the 21st century. He says frankly: “For a documentary filmmaker, this is a perfect place.” He says: “It’s often said that if someone is eager to glimpse the future, they should travel to China, where in so many ways, the future is now. No other country has achieved what China has achieved in such a short time.” Since 2013, Clarke has traveled to most of the provinces and cities in China and seen great challenges and development potentials in each place he went. “Everyone worked very hard, eager to build a better future,” he recalls. “I’m making a film in China” After five years of refinement, the domestic premiere of Better Angels directed by Clarke was held in Beijing in 2018. It is a large-scale documentary film focusing on Sino-US relations. Clarke believes that “a perspective from the world is needed to observe the fate of ordinary people behind the Sino-US relations.” “However, after the film was released in North America, we were criticized a lot for its nonconformity with the prejudice of some people in America towards China,” says Clarke. Nevertheless, he doesn’t intend to change his goal—to document the real China. In 2019, he began to make preparations for another documentary film about China’s poverty alleviation and its building of a moderately prosperous society. As everyone knows, the year 2020 was the year when China finished building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and it was also the final year for the 13th Five-Year Plan. Meanwhile, 2020 was also a year of a decisive victory for the elimination of poverty. Clarke says: “Nearly 600 million people have been lifted out of poverty with universal literacy and a burgeoning middle class, and all this was achieved in just 40 years. It’s astonishing.” “The first time I came to Shanghai is 40 years ago” He says: “As an Englishman, I know well the ups and downs of the Western superpowers. There’s little doubt that China will shape the 21st century. We need to look no further than the way we’re dealing with the pandemic crisis in the West. The governments of some Western countries were too short-sighted and arrogant to learn from China’s experience.” It has been 40 years since Clarke first came to Shanghai. He has settled here now and the Bund is still his favorite. For him, the Bund is the perfect place to illustrate China’s progress and development during the past 100 years. Looking at Pudong from the Bund or the Bund from Pudong, people can catch different beautiful scenery and learn different historical stories. Clarke hopes that, with his camera, he can continue to show the world a real China.
