本书特色

“博雅”学科英语系列教程属于大学英语高阶课程教材，供非英语专业学生使用。一般情况下，学生在完成三个学期的基础英语课程学习后，在第四学期开始该教程的学习。1. 该教程属于通识英语类教材。通识英语（ele，即english for liberal education）以英语语言为载体，以人类文明、科学、文化发展为主题，有内容、有深度，以拓展学生的知识视野、提升学生的人文素养和批判性思维能力为目的。是一种特殊形式的“专门用途英语”。2. 人文素养的提升和思维能力训练是教程编写的指导思路。“人文素养”决定了教程主题虽然与学科相关，但具体内容并非为深奥的专业知识，而是更近似于本学科的科普类教材。“思维能力训练”则要求练习设计摆脱传统语言教材模式，强调对课文内容的反思和知识的运用。3. 英语语言能力的提升也是教程的重要教学目标。在该教程中，学科知识的学习和课后练习均通过英语语言实现。从英语教学的角度看，语言知识的输入采用基于内容的教学方法（content-based instruction, cbi），语言技能的提高则以输出任务为驱动（output-driven）。因此，英语语言能力在学习完成后必然得到很大程度的提升。本分册《西方文明：思想、文化与人物》编写的主旨是让学生了解西方文明的起源、基本思想、文化传统和代表人物，帮助学生建立文明共存、尊重其他文明、珍惜自身文明传统的开放思维方式，引导学生对“我们为什么要学习西方文明”、“中国文明在世界文明中的位置”等话题进行探索，从而达到拓展知识视野、感受人文情怀、提升思辨能力的目的。

作者简介

张媛，女，1973年出生于重庆，1996年毕业于福州大学外语系，2003年南京师范大学外语学院硕士学位，专业为比较文学与世界文学，2007年南京师范大学外语学院博士学位，专业为美国文明研究，2011年9月至2012年9月，美国哈佛大学美国文明研究项目访学，哈佛大学神学院博士后研究项目“新英格兰清教社会的世俗化”。
